“Fresh”

acrylic on canvas, 2004

“Fresh” was an early experiment exploring our relationship to digital media. The piece was created by first pixelating an existing black & white portrait of my younger brother and then transferring the altered image to canvas. I drew a grid on the canvas and created a numbering system to represent shades from black to white, so that I would be able to approximate each shade as they were in the original digital file. As you may be able to tell, this was a long process, and I had to switch paint brands part way through! The addition of the pink “Edwardian Script” text was an homage to Ed Ruscha and a play on juxtaposition.¬†Perhaps a failed experiment, but a meditative one.
