I like fast cars

Embroidery on canvas (2005)

Similar to my other embroidery works, this diptych plays with modern feminine identity. For this work, the car had to be a muscle car—and what would be more classic than a Camaro? This work was displayed at the Corcoran Gallery, The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, and the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse Miami.

Voice of the Elders

Embroidery (2004)

This was a more traditional approach to embroidery, although the message is not. Rather than using typography native to word processing programs, I worked with a classic Gothic lettering found in a sampler template. This work was displayed at the Margulies Collection during Art Basel Miami Beach.

Talking to Grandma

Embroidery (2004)

This was one of my earliest experiments using embroidery to explore my family's past. While the front of the work is neat, the back is a deliberate mess of knots. This work was displayed at the Corcoran Gallery and the Margulies Collection.

Computer Study

Embroidery on canvas (2006)

This was one of my last works to use embroidery. I began to focus more on the process of cross-stitching and its parallels with early 8-bit digital art.

Self Portrait

Vintage Tennis Rackets, acrylic (2006)

These vintage tennis rackets were found in dusty charity shops around Houston, TX. I wanted to take an object charged with stereotypes about race and class to illustrate how it feels to be different when you're also a part of the status quo.

Two Pages

Embroidery on canvas, black tea (2005)

I was inspired by watching pages come out from the printer and wanted to turn this into a visual metaphor for growing up. This is my only embroidery work where I introduced organic elements into the canvas.
